Humping deliveries in the heat, sleet and rain at all times of day and night is grueling work. And at $15/hour I didn’t think I would ever achieve my dream.

I wanted to be wealthy. I wanted it all. I wanted the nice cars and homes, but I also wanted to have enough money I could do whatever I wanted with my family. I wanted to take them on helicopter rides, go to the zoo, go out to dinners and ultimately create special moments together.

“If that guy on the real estate infomercials can do it, I can do it!” I told my friends at work. Finally, one of them said PROVE IT! I remember it as if it was yesterday.

I had just $213 in my bank account. The home study course advertised on the infomercial was a big commitment from me at the time so I asked myself, "Are you ready to be wealthy?" I had to think about it. Can you imagine?

I was nervous but I made a commitment and I decided to invest in myself. I didn't have all the money to pay for the course, so I paid for it in monthly installments. I did everything the course said and had my first property 6 weeks later.

I was still working at FedEx making $15/hour humping deliveries. In my first 6 months of investing I made $100,000 but I was too afraid to leave the security of my part-time job! Is that crazy?

“Pull the truck over,” my boss said to me while riding along with me on one of my routes.

“Here? You want me to pull over here on the highway?” I asked, thinking to myself, this can’t be good.

“I want to talk with you,” she said. “What are you still doing here?”

“What do you mean? I work here,” I responded.

“Cut the crap. I know what you make at FedEx. And I know you’re making 4 or 5 times that in real estate. You need to get a plan together and get the $%@! out!” My boss had a special of way of getting her message across.

Her advice hit me between the eyes. She was right. I just needed someone to help me see what was really holding me back – FEAR!

I was afraid of leaving the security of a job – even if it was only paying me $15 an hour. But here’s what I was really afraid of … looking bad. I could handle setbacks but I was afraid of LOOKING bad in front of my friends and family.

 

LESSON LEARNED #2:

 

Recognize that your FEAR of looking bad

 

can hold you back from achieving great things.

 

I made a plan that night. I figured I needed $16,000 to cover my expenses for the next 6 months so I doubled that figure and set my goal at $32,000. That’s how much I told myself I needed to earn to finally quit my job.

For the next several days, I kept thinking $32,000 … $32,000 … $32,000. I followed every step I learned. When my fear kept creeping back, I focused on the plan.

Make a plan.

I admit I didn’t know if I could do it. I was afraid. I didn’t want to look bad. And I certainly didn’t want to fail. But three days later, I found a home and sold it … for $34,000! I did it!

It wasn’t the most luxurious home. It wasn’t the nicest. It wasn’t the biggest. Or the smallest. Or the most expensive. But I’ll never forget that house at 7201 Minippi Drive. Because it’s the one that set me free! In less than a week I made more than 2 years of working at FedEx. Better yet, I was ahead of the game.

I was soon the “big boy on the block” buying and selling properties. Other investors began to take notice at the local real estate investor meetings. While others complained about not getting enough deals, I was showing up with more than I could handle. Several people asked me to train them, but my answer was always the same, “No!”

I had no intention of teaching them my system that I created for my own company. I was more worried about fine-tuning it so I could take advantage of all the deals coming in. Besides, I had no time for teaching. But one day I remembered that someone had to stop and train me. I realized I had it all wrong. I was fortunate enough to be in a position to help others.
